The Way of Saint James knew where to go, because both the city and the surrounding countryside are astoundingly beautiful.
Today we are not going to talk about the city itself, but suggest that you explore the surrounding area, and see which villages of Santiago de Compostela are the most beautiful!
Towns in Santiago de Compostela that you must visit
If you have decided to take a route through the north of Spain you have made an excellent choice! Because the whole region around Santiago de Compostela is packed with towns where you will want to stay for a long time, here are the most outstanding ones!
Silleda
If you like green spaces, Silleda will be a delight for you. Only half an hour from Santiago, its foundations date back to the Bronze Age. Some of the discoveries are at the Mámoa da Chousa Nova in Abades, unearthed while building the high-speed railway, or the Laribus Viálibus tombstone or Ponte Taboada, both dating back to the Roman period. The latter was already used by pilgrims.
In addition to these points of interest, we recommend that you visit the waterfalls of the Deza trail, which connects the toxa waterfall with the monastery of Carboeiro, or the trail of the Fervenza de Ferveda.
Negreira
A little more than 20 km away by car, you have the town of Negreira, located next to the Tambre river. It has remarkable buildings, with important places such as the pazo of Balandrón or the bridge of Pontemaceira, which leads to the adjoining village. Here, as in the previous village, you can also enjoy the countryside, like the area around the river, visit the reservoir or the fervenzas and pools of Corzán, a perfect place for a swim in the warmer months.
Noia
Another of the towns in Santiago de Compostela that you should visit is Noia, which is part of the Galician Rías Baixas. With a medieval past, its streets are now full of works of art that combine perfectly with the creations of nature itself. If you love fish, you will like Noia even more, because its promenade not only offers great ocean views, but its restaurants are ideal for enjoying shellfish or fresh fish.
Lalín
Lalín is located in the region of Deza, in Pontevedra. This village near Santiago de Compostela boasts archaeological value, as in the case of the seventeenth-century baroque manor house, called Pazo de Liñares. It also has beautiful scenery, like most places in this region, and we encourage you to visit the Fraga de Catasós, with oak and chestnut trees that reach incredible heights.
Padrón
If you like peppers, whether they are hot or not, you cannot miss a visit to Padrón. It is a historic town in Pontevedra whose old town runs along the Sar River, and which is reached after crossing the Bridge of Santiago. Besides eating a tapa of these peppers, it is also interesting to discover the life of the writer Rosalía de Castro, who was born and lived in this town.
Lousame
Seven kilometers from Noia, you can stop in Lousame to visit the monastery of Toxosoutos, which dates back to the 12th century and is located in the middle of the countryside. The architecture blends with the scenery, and in addition to the building itself next to the San Xusto River, there is the surprise of the vertical six-metre drop and its leafy walking routes.
