Spain has hundreds of interesting places to visit. Besides the most popular cities, there are places full of charm that are well worth a day of sightseeing to get to know them a little better. That is why today we are recommending some routes near Bilbao where you will be able to discover places whose beauty will remain forever engraved in your mind.

San Juan de Gaztelugatxe

Although by now it is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Basque Country, it is still an impressive place. There are 231 steps to take you up to the hermitage and enjoy views of the Bay of Biscay that you will not be able to get anywhere else.

And if, after the tour, you feel like seeing this beautiful spot from another point of view, go to the Matxitxako Lighthouse. From there you can see (unless the mist prevents it) the footbridge that joins the two pieces of land.

Lekeitio, a must on routes close to Bilbao

The fishing village of Lekeitio is just one hour from the capital of Biscay, and is considered one of the most beautiful on the entire Basque coast. One of its central points, as you can imaging, is its port, always full of small fishing boats.

Behind you will see colorful houses with wooden balconies that retain their traditional charm. If you walk around, you will have no trouble finding a bar or restaurant where you can enjoy fresh fish.

Vitoria, another capital city less than an hour away

From one capital we go to another, because the routes around Bilbao can take you to Vitoria. Considered as the great unknown of the Basque Country, those who have had the good fortune to pass through there already consider it one of their favorite places.

Vitoria is a small city, but full of charm, with a medieval air that makes a big impression. There is a lot to see and enjoy, but if you are in a hurry, focus on the historic center. And don't be surprised by the amount of green space it has. Remember that you are in one of the greenest cities in Europe, with one of the highest ratios of parks per capita.

Oma Forest

Back in the province of Vizcaya, very close to Guernica, is the Oma forest. It is a natural feature that has been gaining popularity in recent years, and this is largely due to the work of the artist Agustín Ibarrola.

He came up with the idea of painting the tree trunks in different colors, creating a unique environment. Although the Oma forest is now a tourist site, the connection between nature and art has generated a unique atmosphere that invites you to disconnect.

Mundaka, a classic on the routes near Bilbao

We know that the Romans were there and there is speculation that the Vikings may have been there too, but what is clear is that today it is surfer territory. This town in the Bay of Biscay is known worldwide for being a perfect spot for riding the waves on a surfboard.

Even if you don't surf, Mundaka has a lot to offer you. You can stroll through its colorful streets, visit its picturesque port, and enjoy the local cuisine. If you are a keen photographer, or simply want to admire the beautiful views, don't forget to go to the Portuondo viewpoint.

Suspension bridge

Routes near Bilbao do not necessarily involve spending a lot of time in the car. Just 20 minutes from the capital of Biscay you will find something that will surprise you: the first metal ferry bridge built in the world.

It connects Portugalete with Guetxo and is an admirable work of engineering. So much so that it has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Of course, if you have the time, don't hesitate to do the round trip, it is quite an experience.

San Sebastian

We could not finish the route without a visit to the capital of Guipuzcoa. San Sebastian / Donostia, is only 45 minutes from Bilbao. In this beautiful city there is so much to discover, from the beach of La Concha to the Peine del Viento.

Also, keep in mind that your visit will not be complete if you do not go through the old town, climb Mount Urgull to see the English cemetery, and take the funicular to go up Mount Igueldo.
