Three days is all you need to tour of some of the most beautiful towns and villages of Terres de l'Ebre. Make your next getaway a road trip, in which a rental car is your most trusted ally.

Discover the most beautiful towns and villages in Terres de l'Ebre

Templar fortresses, picturesque mountain villages or the charm of a traditional fishing village, this is just a sample of the variety of environments that you can enjoy on this tour of the Terres de l'Ebre.

However, there is much more to see in the southernmost region of Catalonia. The area’s scenic and natural wealth is recognised by UNESCO, which declared the area a Biosphere Reserve in 2013. A unique experience in a route of only 200 kilometres (124 miles), which takes you from the sea to the mountains.

Discovering the Ebro Delta

We begin this tour in the heart of the Ebro Delta Natural Park, a protected natural area, located at the mouth of the Ebro River, in the province of Tarragona.

A plain that is no more than two metres above sea level, which visually immerses you in a sense of infinite horizon where land, sea and sky merge into one. It is one of the most unique wetlands in the Mediterranean, a paradise for birds and characterised by its rice fields.

How to get there

The most direct way to reach it is through exit 41 (Amposta) or exit 39-A (L'Ampolla) of the AP-7, depending on whether you want to enter from the south or the north.

What to see

You cannot miss the view of the mouth of the Ebro River from the Zigurat Viewpoint or the Laguna de la Tancada, an enclave with the highest density of flamingos in the park. Of course, the unique Barra del Trabucador (a narrow sandy arm of land with the sea on both shores that extends for miles) and Punta del Fangar (a desert of moving dunes) also stand out.

Of its most picturesque villages we can highlight Poblenou del Delta, with its white streets and manicured gardens, surrounded by rice fields. This spot is ideal for tasting the local gastronomy (rice and oysters).

Following the course of the Ebro

A route that does not exceed 50 km (31 mi) and features three mandatory stops. Three places that can be included in any list of the most beautiful towns and villages in Catalonia.

Tortosa

Poblenou del Delta to Tortosa is about 28-30 km (17-18 mi), a journey you can complete in about 35 minutes. This city has gone down in history as an enclave influenced by three cultures (Jewish, Arab and Christian). Among its must-see sights: the Tortosa Castle, Cathedral of Santa Maria de Tortosa and the Jewish Quarter.

Benifallet

After driving parallel to the Ebro river for about 25 km (15 mi) along the C-12, you arrive at the next stop. Benifallet is a village that seems to literally ‘hang’ over a bend in the river. It stands out for its great treasure, Coves Meravelles, spectacular subterranean heritage where whimsical structures grow in all directions.

Do not leave without trying a pastisset (sweet treat stuffed with Cabello de ángel jam), any of its famous rice dishes or its vegetable pot with Butifarra de Perol.

Miravet

A short route of just 12 km (7 mi) will take you to Miravet, a village that looks like something out of a postcard. Undoubtedly, the most recognisable sight is the Templar Castle that crowns the town. A 12th-century fortress preserved in perfect condition.

In addition, a tour of the old town and its houses, which seem to rise out from the stone of the river, is also a must. Before that, we recommend a stop at the Barrio de los Alfareros, just at the entrance of the village, where you can buy prestigious pottery from the area.

End of the route in the mountains: Horta de Sant Joan

After about 40 km (25 mi) by road, the river landscape is left behind as we are taken in by a mountain environment. Out of all the beautiful towns and villages in the Terres de l'Ebre, we have chosen Horta de Sant Joan, considered the soul of the Terre Alta region.

By the way, we are not the first to recognise its beauty, as this town was a source of inspiration for Picasso, a painter born in Malaga but whose cubism was drawn from contemplating the houses and rocks of the Horta. In addition to the Picasso Centre, we suggest you visit the Convent of San Salvador, at the foot of the imposing Santa Barbara mountain.

And there you have a detailed plan for the next long weekend or a weekend getaway! This route through beautiful towns and villages of Terres de l'Ebre surely won’t leave you indifferent.
