Alicante is known worldwide for its excellent beaches and warm climate. However, many are unaware that this province is one of the most mountainous in Spain, offering many possibilities for hiking in its diverse natural landscapes. Here we offer you a brief summary of 10 hiking routes in Alicante, adapted to all tastes and levels of difficulty.

1. El Barranc de l'Infern

This route is popularly known as "The Cathedral of Hiking" or "The Route of the 6,000 steps". The Barranco del Infierno is located in the Vall de Laguart, in the Marina Alta area and is crossed by the Girona river. The route is about 14 kilometers long and has about 800 meters of elevation gain. Its landscapes are of extraordinary beauty and it has a high archaeological and geological interest.


2. Parc Natural El Fondo

The Hondo Natural Park is located between the towns of Elche and Crevillente and is one of the most important wetlands in the world. It has been protected since 1988 by the Generalitat Valenciana. It allows you to choose between several flat and easy routes of up to 5 kilometers. Along the routes you can contemplate the lagoons and the species that inhabit them of high ornithological value: flamingos, birds and other protected species.


3. The Maigmó

The Maigmó mountain range is located between the Alicante municipalities of Castalla, Tibi, Petrer and Agost. Its highest peak, also called Maigmó, has an altitude of 1,300 meters. It allows two mountain routes, the higher one on its north face, and the lower one on its south face. The mountainous group forms the Natural Park of the Maigmó Massif. It has a rich flora of holm oaks and pine forests. At the foot of the Maigmó mountain range is the Monnegre river and the Tibi reservoir.


4. Font Roja Natural Park

The Carrascar de la Font Roja Natural Park is located between the municipalities of Ibi and Alcoy. In the area you can try several routes of varying difficulty and visit the sanctuary of the area. Following the route of the Carboneras you can climb to the highest point and contemplate the wonderful views of the whole area.


5. Vall de la Gallinera

El Vall de la Gallinera is a municipality located in the Marina Alta region, in Alicante. This valley offers a multitude of hiking trails: the ascent to the Penya Foradada, the Route of the 8 villages, or the ascent to the Castell d'Alcalà. In the spring months you can admire the cherry blossoms in the valley.


6. Circular route of the Guadalest Reservoir

This route runs along the Sierra de Aitana, Xortà or La Serrella. The circular route has a length of 11.5 kilometers and is full of pine forests. After the route you can visit the town of El Castell de Guadalest, with its typical cobbled streets and medieval appearance, as well as its famous hermitage and its Moorish past.

From the viewpoint you can observe the marvelous view of the artificial reservoir of turquoise waters.

7. Circular Route of the Sierra de Bèrnia

This route is comprised of 11 kilometers along the Alicante municipalities of Alcalalí, Jalón, Calpe, Altea, Benisa, Callosa de Ensarrià and Tárbena. The sierra is a mountain range that belongs to the Cordilleras Béticas. This is one of the most complete hiking routes in the province of Alicante. Along the route you can enjoy splendid views of the Bay of Altea and at the end you reach its emblematic tunnel excavated in the rock known as "El Forat de la Sierra de Bernia".


8. Peñon de Ifach

The Peñón de Ifach is located in the municipality of Calpe, within the Penyal d'Ifac Natural Park, protected since 1987. The Peñón is 332 meters high and is off the coast of Calpe. To make the ascent it is necessary to make a reservation, since entrance is limited to 300 people per day.


9. La Cova Tallada

The Cova Tallada is located between the municipalities of Denia and Jávea. Via the coastal route you reach the famous Cave, located at sea level. This cave was carved by man and offers us an unmissable spectacular beauty.


10. Benitatxell Cliffs Route

Poble Nou de Benitatxell is located in the north of the province of Alicante and boasts a spectacular coastline. Along this route you can enjoy impressive cliffs that lead to magnificent wild coves, such as Cala del Moraig and Cala Llebeig, with pure and crystalline waters.
